This is the sequel and conclusion to Schwab’s ‘This Savage Song’. It takes place a few months after the events of This Savage Song.
I was not a huge fan of the first book. I thought that it was well written but it just didn’t really do much for me. I ended up rating it 3 stars. I was hesitant about continuing the series because of that but I am so glad that I did. I felt more connected to the story and the characters this time around. I also thought that this story was more action packed and I found myself wondering how all the pieces would end up coming together.
I thought that the graphic nature of this book was done well. I know some people don’t like depictions of death and stuff like that but I think that by including those graphic depictions it made the monsters come alive. It was evident from very early on that the monsters in this novel were dangerous and scary and needed to be defeated. There were a few scenes where I was left creeped out by the gruesomeness which I wasn’t expecting since this is a YA novel.
The changes that the characters in the novel displayed were done well. Both characters changed in the six months that lapsed since the last book. I kind of liked how Schwab made the characters change a bit because every single person changes over the course of their lifetime and I think that after the events of ‘This Savage Song’ all the characters involved would have had exhibited changes.
I absolutely loved the introduction of Soro. I think that they might have been my favorite character and I liked how they didn’t really have a gender.
All in all I loved this novel and I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars.
