Scythe by Neal Shusterman

I absolutely loved this book. I wasn’t 100% certain I would like it since I tried to read Unwind and couldn’t get into. Once I started reading this novel I couldn’t stop. I found it intriguing and just when I thought I had figured out where the plot was going it got turned upside down. This was definitely a great read and I can’t wait to read the second book.

I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to connect with the characters in this story which is what happened with Unwind but I was immediately drawn to Citra. I thought she was strong, independent and I loved her sarcastic nature. Rowan was great character as well. I didn’t connect with him quite as much as I did Citra but I found myself concerned about how his story would end. I loved the relationship between Rowan and Citra and I hope that it will be explored in the second book.

The bad guys in this story were awesome as well. They were characters that you love to hate. I don’t think I’ve felt intrigued by a character that was bad in quite some time.

The one issue I had was that there were passages that dragged on or things that didn’t necessarily seem pertinent to the story. However, I think they were added for ‘world building’ purposes and I did end up enjoying those bits.

I stayed up all night to complete this book and I didn’t find myself skimming pages which is something I do periodically.

If I were to rate this story I would give it four out of five stars.
